Jeroen Baert’s, computer scientist & comedian from the Nerdland group, keynote kicked things off by separating the hype from reality in the realm of Artificial Intelligence. Attendees gained a deeper understanding of neural networks, generative AI, and the impact these technologies have on society. Ruben Vermeulen, Lead Front-end architect at Sofico took the stage next. Together with the audience, he explored Web Components. Ruben painted a potential future where developers can break free from the limitations of specific frameworks and write code that seamlessly works across different platforms and frameworks, avoiding starting from scratch every time.
Optimizing development: exploring go and streamlining car buying
Considering a switch from Java? The session on Go programming language, presented by Cedric De Pauw, Technical consultant and Wim Claeys, VP Architecture, highlighted Go’s strengths in simplicity and efficiency. Concluding that it makes a compelling choice for specific development needs. Sofico’s Car-as-a-Service (CaaS) team’s Nyi-Nyi Htun, UX researcher and Matthias Hoffman, Software engineer, offered a glimpse into the future of car buying with their conversational assistant project. This innovative technology promises to revolutionize the car buying experience by providing personalized guidance and recommendations.
Deep dives: unveiling the math behind AI and securing applications
For those who like to see beyond the curtain, Kaloyan Pavlov’s, again one of Sofico’s Software engineers, session provided a deep dive into the mathematics behind Machine Learning models. From basic regressions to complex deep learning algorithms, the talk really brought the concepts to life. On the security front, Guillaume Gekiere and Khena Jacobs, also both Software engineers, equipped attendees with the knowledge to effectively utilize Content Security Policy (CSP) – a critical mechanism for safeguarding web applications.

SOTECO isn’t just about the talks, there was also good food, cool goodies, and a private tour of the Ghent venue (and rooftop view!). In the evening, there was time to socialize around dinner and drinks.
SOTECO events aim to foster relationships between all Sofico’s software engineers across different offices. Aside from the event in Europe, there’s also a dedicated SOTECO for the Japan and Australia-based colleagues. So, will you join the next edition?
